Pinewoods Revealed reconnects Harrogate’s 96-acre woodland with its overlooked place in the Cure, using that history to shape the future of the forest above the springs.

Harrogate’s Cure extended beyond mineral water into a landscape of bracing air, gardens, promenades and movement. The first Scots pines were planted on Harlow Moor in 1796. By the 1890s, Harrogate Corporation intended to create a pinewood to rival the Kurwälder of Germany’s spa towns, and in 1907 another 15,000 trees were planted in the belief that their scent would carry the woodland’s restorative influence into Harrogate below.

Although that relationship gradually slipped from view, Pinewoods remained one of Harrogate’s most valued landscapes while its place within the Cure was largely forgotten. Pinewoods Revealed reconnects the springs, gardens and woods as a single landscape of water, air, movement and health. The Cure did not end at the Pump Room. It continued into the woods.

Across Europe, the Kurwald was the cure forest of a spa town, offering space for walking, fresh air, rest and recovery. Pinewoods is one of Britain’s clearest expressions of that tradition. Britain’s Kurwald restores that meaning for the present, bringing history, nature, wellbeing and community stewardship into a single idea.

Recovering what Pinewoods once meant to Harrogate gives its 230-year history a living consequence, shaping a more resilient and biodiverse woodland, an everyday place of restoration and a landscape cared for as part of the town’s living Cure.
